Multitasking is a myth

Most people think to make the most of the 24 hours in a day, you need to squeeze in as much as possible and work on 5 things at once. 

 

We praise those who multitask and think they are superhuman! 

 

Here is a truth bomb for you. 

 

Multitasking is a myth - it doesn’t work. 

 

If you are thinking to yourself…

 

“But I am good at multitasking, everyone tells me how good I am at it” 

 

I hate to break it to you, but no you are not.

 

You are probably going to feel a little uncomfortable with what I have to say. 

 

When we really take a step back and look at those who multitask, they are stressed, always operating in reactive mode, rushing around and exhausted from trying to do “all the things”. 

 

They prioritize their to-do list above all else and as a result, their health and relationships suffer. 

 

If multitasking really worked, you would think those who have “mastered it” would have more time, feel calm, be in control of the day, and have less on their to-do list (instead of a larger one by the end of the week). 



So why is multitasking a myth? 

 

Well, it is physically impossible to complete 2 complex tasks at the exact same time.

 

Think about it. 

 

Can you really be writing that social media post, while answering an email at the exact same time?

 

Of course not!

 

What you think you have mastered - is something called context switching. 

 

This is when you switch between two tasks really quickly back and forth.

 

The thing is…every time you switch between one activity to a different activity, it takes time for your brain to recalibrate and figure out what you are doing. 

 

It's saying “What’s the context here? Where am I at? And what’s the next step?” 

 

All of that takes time every time you switch between two, three, and four tasks. 

 

Below explains just how much time you lose the more projects you try and multitask.  

  • 1 task = 100% of working time available for that task 
  • 2 tasks = 40% of working time for each task
  • 3 tasks = 20% of working time for each task 
  • 4 tasks = 10% of working time for each task

 

If you have 5 tasks that you are working on, you will lose 80% of your time, from context switching. 

 

You will be ā…• as productive as you could have been if you just focus on one task at a time. 

 

So, instead of trying to answer emails while writing that blog post, and posting that IG story. 

 

Block out time in your calendar for some “deep focus work.”

 

Limit distractions like putting your phone in a drawer, turn off notifications that pop up on your desktop, close your office door, and let your team know that you are not to be interrupted unless there is a fire in the building. 

 

Focus on working on the highest priority of the day and don’t start another task until you have finished the one you are working on. 

 

This will be a game changer I promise. 

 

Not only will you get more done…

 

But it will also help you prioritize your workload between high-value tasks that are important and “need to get done”

 

And low-value tasks (time-wasters) that we add to our to-do list that are “nice to get done.”

 

So right now, you have a choice. 

 

You can continue operating like a Burnt Out Business Owner doing everything in your business and working 60+ hour weeks just to get by... (In fact, that’s exactly what most people do).
